The observation mound in Kněževs is a beloved spot for aviation enthusiasts, photographers, and families eager to experience aircraft takeoffs and landings up close. Located near Prague Airport’s main runway 06/24, the mound’s elevated position provides excellent views of airport activities.
Originally closer to the runway, the mound was relocated in 2018 to allow airport expansions and the construction of an aviation fuel pipeline. Now positioned 51 meters further and nearly two meters higher, the new mound offers an improved vantage point, easily accessible via an unpaved gravel path. Although planned playground facilities were never completed, the site remains popular year-round and free to visit.
On special occasions, when unique aircraft or liveries arrive, the mound becomes especially crowded, with enthusiasts gathering well before the aircraft’s scheduled landing. Despite its recommended capacity of about twenty people, the location has occasionally hosted much larger groups.
To enhance visitors’ experience, Prague Airport installed informational panels at the observation site. Earlier panels, poorly installed, suffered damage and criticism. The airport responded by setting up robust new panels near the mound’s stairs. These include an airport orientation map highlighting terminals, key points of interest, and excursion routes, as well as advertising for the airport’s own e-shop.
However, a panel comparing aircraft models drew criticism for being outdated. It contrasts aircraft like the Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A320, instead of the newer Boeing 737 MAX8 or Airbus A321neo. It also features less common models like the ATR 72 turboprop and Dash Q400, despite limited current usage. Most notably missing are popular large aircraft like the Airbus A380, A350, and Boeing 787 or iconic Boeing 747 cargo planes.
Additional viewing spots near Hostivice offer another perspective at the intersection of runways RWY 12/30 and RWY 06/24. Other popular photography options include the roof of OC Šestka, specialized airport fence lens openings, and guided photo excursions.
This easily accessible location promises an engaging visit for families and dedicated aircraft spotters alike, making it a worthwhile destination near Prague Airport.
