Prague Airport has started the process for choosing a contractor to build a new flyover, which will serve as the main traffic route in the airport’s public area. This project aims to create a transport system that can handle more traffic, is safer, and is built to last. It will link up with the planned expansion of Terminal 2 and will greatly enhance the flow of traffic within the Václav Havel Airport Prague facility. According to the current timeline, the construction work is set to be completed by 2031.
The flyover will act as the central traffic route for the airport’s public spaces. It will circle a large section of the North (Sever) area, allowing for better traffic distribution. Building the flyover will also provide a safer environment for travelers, staff, and visitors by directing traffic away from areas meant for pedestrians. This means passengers can move from public transport stops, train stations, or parking lots to the terminals without having to navigate through cars. The project includes the creation of a new three-lane flyover for incoming and outgoing vehicles, along with connecting pathways in front of Terminals 1 and 2, as well as access ramps. Additionally, the pathway in front of Terminal 2 will be expanded to reach the new Pier D, with departing traffic using an elevated level that leads directly to the junction with Aviatická Street. Moreover, the plan includes updates to other access roads, especially near the slip road leading to the flyover by Terminal 1, as well as improvements to Schengenská and Jana Kašpara streets, where a larger, more efficient roundabout will be constructed.
“The new flyover is a vital component of the overall modernization of Václav Havel Airport Prague. Its purpose is to prepare the airport for an increase in passenger numbers, improve service quality, and ensure the infrastructure can support this growth for many years ahead. One of the main advantages of the project will be the separation of different types of traffic, which will keep private vehicle traffic separate from airport operations, taxi services, public transport, and pedestrians. This will lead to improved safety, a smoother flow of traffic, and a better transport system that can handle unexpected events more effectively,” said Jiří Pos, Chairman of the Board of Directors. He also added: “Additionally, the new layout will reduce the chances of accidents, make navigation easier for travelers, and create a more open and pleasant public area in front of the terminals.”
The estimated cost for this public contract is around CZK 2.3 billion. However, this figure is a preliminary estimate that will be refined during the selection process; the final cost will depend on the proposals submitted by those bidding for the project. Construction is planned to begin in the first quarter of 2028, with completion expected by the second quarter of 2031. The construction will be executed in phases to ensure that the airport’s operations continue smoothly, providing unrestricted access to the terminals for passengers and allowing emergency services to operate without interruptions at all times.
