Road undergoing reconstruction by Terminal 1. What traffic restrictions shall be expected?"Terminal 1 Road Renovations: What You Need to Know About Upcoming Traffic Restrictions!"

On Sunday, 29 March, Prague Airport will start its summer flight schedule, which will last until 24 October this year. This schedule will provide flights to a total of 183 destinations, which is an increase of 15 from last year. A total of 77 airlines will operate their services from Prague Airport this summer, and the overall seating capacity is expected to grow by 6% compared to last year. In Terminal 2, the number of CT scanners will be increased, making it easier for travelers to get through security checks.

“Right now, due to the ongoing geopolitical issues, it’s quite challenging to foresee how this will affect the upcoming summer flight season. We are in regular touch with various airlines, and we will continually evaluate their specific operational and financial challenges along with the overall demand from passengers,” explains Jiří Pos, Chairman of the Board at Prague Airport. He adds: “The summer flight schedule we are presenting again shows our strong connections to Europe. Beyond adding more flights on existing routes, travelers will also benefit from new regular services to popular vacation spots like Ibiza, Spain, and Bodrum, Turkey. Growing our long-haul flight options is part of our long-term strategy, and we are excited to introduce two additional long-haul routes. Starting on 21 May, American Airlines will begin a new regular route from Philadelphia in the US, and in August, we will be welcoming the new long-haul airline, STARLUX Airlines, which will initiate regular flights to Taipei.”

This summer season, the total number of flights from Václav Havel Airport in Prague will rise to more than 30 connections. The airline Etihad Airways is planning to operate daily flights to Abu Dhabi (up from three times a week originally); however, due to the current situation in the Middle East, it will kick off the summer with fewer flights. The new STARLUX Airlines route to Taipei will operate three times a week starting on 1 August, and from 1 October, this airline—Prague’s first European destination—will boost its flights to four per week. Additionally, Air Canada will add one more weekly flight to its Toronto route (which currently operates four times a week), and China Airlines will increase its Taipei route to four flights per week (up from three).

The airline Smartwings is also increasing its flight frequencies compared to last summer, offering routes such as Valencia (now daily), Malaga (now twice daily), Paris (now three times daily), and Samos (now four times a week). This year, Smartwings will also explore new destinations including Barcelona (daily), Rome (daily), Toulouse (twice a week), Bilbao (twice a week), and Porto (twice a week). Among low-cost carriers, Ryanair will enhance its flight frequencies on 16 of its routes (for example, from Košice, Tirana, and Milan), Pegasus Airlines will ramp up frequencies from Istanbul to 16 times a week, and Wizz Air will introduce new summer routes connecting Prague to Skopje, Iași, and Timișoara.

More CT Scanners and Self-Service Technology

In early May, the airport will add two new CT scanners in Terminal 2 as part of the central security screening, bringing the total in that terminal up to eight. “Our surveys indicate that the new CT scanners in Terminal 2 have significantly boosted passenger satisfaction with security checks,” explains Jiří Pos. “These advanced machines streamline the process.”

When using a CT scanner, passengers won’t need to remove electronic devices and liquids from their carry-on bags. This rule will still apply in the other security lanes. Additionally, passengers departing from Terminal 2 can bring one extra container of liquids up to two liters, in addition to the standard one-liter bag of liquids with containers of up to 100 milliliters each. In Terminal 1, CT scanners are not yet available due to the current layout of the security process. However, there are plans to integrate this modern technology in the future as part of a renovation project, which includes constructing a central security checkpoint to implement CT scanners. Consequently, the rules in Terminal 1 remain unchanged, allowing only liquids in containers up to 100 milliliters, packed in a single clear one-liter bag, and requiring the removal of all liquids and electronic devices from luggage for separate inspection.

Starting this summer, passengers can also expect to see innovative technology in selected departure lounges in Terminal 2. These self-boarding gates allow travelers to scan their boarding passes to open the gates for boarding their flight. This automation will enhance the boarding experience. The airport plans to have this system installed in four departure lounges in Terminal 2 by the end of April and beginning of May.

The self-service facilities are also expanding. Before the busy summer holidays, 12 new self-service baggage drop-off desks will be introduced in the Terminal 2 departure hall, providing alternatives to traditional check-in counters, which tend to have long queues during peak hours. Travelers at Prague Airport will have a total of 32 self-service baggage drop-off desks available, supported currently by 17 airlines, with more likely to join soon.

Prague Airport anticipates serving over 12 million passengers during this summer season, marking a 6.6% year-on-year increase. Before the peak summer travel period begins, the airport will launch a communication campaign to provide travelers with helpful tips on how to prepare for their journey and what to expect before they leave.
